Preparing for another transition: Autumn

As the outer landscape is in transition, so is our inner one. Here are four things you can do to prepare for Autumn:

1.     Let go. The Lung and the Large Intestine organ systems represent this action very well. Both organs, which are paired organs this time of year, have a physical action of letting go so you stay alive and healthy. Constipation is not your friend. Asthma can limit your engagement in life. Got any emotions or memories that would serve you to let go so you can move forward? It’s time.

2.     Change your diet. Eat more nourishing foods to help build your energy and sustain you during the cooler months. The flavors of Fall are pungent foods. Ginger root, garlic and coriander help clear out the mucus in the lungs and intestines. Eat more mustard, horseradish, onions, celery, cabbage, broccoli, radish, daikon, and seaweeds. For something different, go to an ethnic market to pick up lotus seeds and lotus root. They are beneficial for lung health. As always, cut the sugar way down. Eat with the seasons so strawberries, not so much. Yes to peaches and apples.

3.     Bolster your immune system. Supplements can help if your diet is lacking. You either have to eat it or take it. And if you take it, you want to look for high quality vitamins (yes, I have a great supplier) such as C (can be taken in high doses) combined with zinc, E and selenium will help fortify your immune system. Vitamin D is helpful too, with decreasing hours of sunlight. A better way to get D is to continue going outside whenever possible. I recommend getting a dog (I’m serious) or volunteering to walk dogs at the shelter. Not only will this help you get natural D but it also boosts your overall well-being when you give back to another species.

4.     Reflect. Acknowledge. This is a great time to acknowledge where you are and where you’ve been. It’s an important exercise in getting some perspective on your life to see if what you’re up to is a true representation of where you are and where you want to be. This season asks us to slow down, this is one of its gifts. You’ll appreciate this come Spring when it’s time for massive action.
